Cinema Reborn: Yol - The Full Version

A new version of Yilmaz Güney’s Cannes 1982 Palme d’Or-winning feature. Gone, the star of 100 plus films, creator of another 25 over a life of just 47 years, the ‘… firebrand of his country’s intellectual life...’ (Richard Corliss), was imprisoned throughout the film's production. But assistant Serif Gören directed Güney’s screenplay, then smuggled the negatives to France for editing after Güney’s 1981 prison escape. It’s interweaving stories of prisoners on a week’s parole painstakingly dissects the ingrained oppression in Turkish society. This re-release restores a subplot of a sixth prisoner cut in 1982, but also deletes original’s “Kurdish Vignette”.

“The film’s poetry, its combination of sound and image especially, has an unconscious innocence no longer available to most European and American narratives, and it is inspired by an enormous compassion for the suffering people endure at each other’s hands in a world where the strong pick upon the weak, the weak upon the weaker.” Chris Petit, Time Out Film Guide
